Although it has a resident population of just over 500,000, these numbers double every summer, when it is the Edinburgh Festival. This is actually a collection of lots of smaller festivals, including the Edinburgh Fringe, which is the largest festival of performing arts in the world. Other popular attractions at this time include the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival.

Why not visit some of the magnificent buildings and architecture? There is a huge choice of places to see, such as the Scott Monument, Nelson's Monument, the National Monument, the statue of Thomas Chalmers and those on George Street, the Scottish Parliament Building or Queen Mary's Bath House.

There are plenty of museums and galleries too - the Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the National Gallery and Assembly on The Mound, for instance.

If you fancy a little fresh air and open spaces, you can visit Princess Street Gardens, Meadow Park, Calton Hill, Arthurs Seat or Edinburgh Quay at Canal Basin. A little further afield at Leith Port are the docks and the Royal Yacht Britannia's resting place, as well as the fabulous Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

If sport is your thing, you can watch football at Hibernian or Hearts in the city, or rugby at Murrayfield. Edinburgh has a highly regarded university and of course, there is Edinburgh's legendary shopping experience on Princess Street.
